SALSI 2023 Winner

5th INternational Saliva Summit of India

Research Idea Award

We proudly announce Dr Tulsi Bharat Tarase as the winner of the Research Idea Award at SALSI 2023! She presented a unique idea to develop an affordable, cost-effective, herbal-based organic mouthwash for solving the oral hygiene issues of the geriatric population and non-ambulatory patients. We wish her good luck and best wishes for her future endeavours.

Topic: An instantaneous angle for an extensive broadcast

Summary: The metabolic profile of saliva can provide an early outlook of the changes associated with a wide range of diseases. A pilot study was done to analyse a wide range of exogenous, endogenous metabolites to detect easily approachable diagnosing methods for mass screening of various diseases and the efficacy of saliva as a diagnostic tool

Topic: Assessment of the influence of vegetarian and non-vegetarian diet on qualitative and quantitative changes in saliva and its relation with the occurrence of dental caries

Summary: Saliva is critical for the preservation and maintenance of oral health. This is a pilot study highlighting the correlation between the type of diet, saliva and occurrence of caries and can help to plan preventive strategies for the population at greater risk for the development of dental caries.

Topic: A Smartphone-based detection of cancer biomarkers in bio-fluid

Summary: Developed a smartphone-based sensing platform for the detection of polyamines in the saliva sample. Our study reveals the potential of TA-AuNPs for the detection of polyamine as a biomarker
using a smartphone.

Topic: Correlation of salivary glucose level and blood glucose level

Summary: Diabetes mellitus is a group of metabolic disorders characterized by hyperglycemia resulting from an absolute deficiency of insulin secretion and reduction in the biological effects of insulin and is identified as one of the four priority noncommunicable diseases. Saliva is the easiest non-invasively available biological fluid that can be well used for glucose level estimation. Through this study, a relative significance was found between the blood glucose level and salivary glucose level and a correlation has been tried to establish.

Topic: Gamma-glutamyl Transferase: A maker of periodontitis

Summary: Gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT), an enzyme which is used routinely to detect liver diseases is now implicated in the estimation of oxidative stress in chronic inflammatory conditions like metabolic syndrome, and cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases. Periodontitis, a disease of multifactorial etiology, is a host-mediated exaggerated immuno-inflammatory response. The present study aims to assess the GGT levels in comparison to healthy adults which would further explain the degree of relative oxidative stress in periodontitis.

Topic: Covid 19 and Sjogren’s Syndrome

Summary: Sjogren’s syndrome, characterised by immune dysregulation affecting several organs in variable severity, has been of particular interest given the accelerated phase of the immune response in the course of SARS- CoV-2 infection leads to the acute inflammatory response & respiratory distress syndrome or multi-organ failure. Conventional synthetic disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs, mainly hydroxyl-chloroquine & methotrexate, which might play some protective role against the most harmful manifestations of Covid-19.
